Africa: rivers of West Africa from Senegal to Cameroon (Ref. 188), including Senegal, Gambia, Bia, Niger basin and Wouri River (Ref. 81269, 81631); and man-made lakes Lake Kainji (Ref. 188) and Lake Volta (Ref. 188, 81269). Also reported from Sanaga River in Cameroon (Ref. 51193).

soft rays: 17 - 20. Diagnosis: Sierrathrissa leonensis is distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: belly rounded; prepelvic scutes minute, 4-10, without arms, supporting a low membranous keel, postpelvic scutes similar, the keel more apparent; lower gillrakers 13-16; pelvic insertion well before dorsal fin, with 7 fin rays; and anal fin beginning under dorsal fin base (Ref. 188). The genus Sierrathrissa is characterised by its non-keeled pre- and postpelvic scutes, both lacking ascending arms, except for the W-shaped scute located at the pelvic-fin bases (Ref. 81269). It commonly occurs with Pellonula species, which have 8 pelvic fin rays, normal scutes and the pelvic fin insertion more or less below the dorsal fin origin (Ref. 188).
Found in rivers, but also in man-made lakes, schooling in open waters and at about 2 to 8m in Lake Kainji; rising to about 30cm from the surface at night in Lake Volta (Ref. 188). Feeds on plankton, especially cladocerans (Ref. 188).
